Ladder is a tool that broadens one’s confined (spiritual) boundary by helping to access the unknown world. This illustrates a soul’s journey towards outside of kiva, or Earth.
As the soul cannot go outside of kiva by itself, the emissaries help it by sacrificing themselves to become ladder’s rungs and offers a magical journey of flight.
As a result, the soul meets the outer space, both heaven and new world.
