BREAD

BREAD BREAD BREAD BREAD BREAD BREAD
Inspired by Lexi Smith's influential website "Bread on Earth" the Bread book goes beyond the daily practice of fermentation and baking but is also centered around bread-making practice as a social, political, economic, and ecological medium. In the Bread book, recipes, techniques, and experiences in making bread become mediums to convey and voice out important political themes. Alongside Lexi Smith's stimulating artworks and writings, the book integrates archives of bizarre and playful images of the niche interest of bread. These images unwrap a new visage of the bread culture while helping the general readers digest political themes raised through bread. Aside from the use of graphics, the book also incorporated typographic layouts to introduce chapters. These layouts serve as introductions of upcoming passages and consist of a typographic palette within the confinement of the pages. These purposeful designs create a harmonious flow for the readers as they engage with the deeper topics of the book. In addition, the book strives to revive the hands-on nature of the bread-making culture by using handwriting graphics elements, which reinvigorates the unique combination of recipes, insightful articles, and image collections centered around the love and practice of bread and fermentation.
