Jefferson Davis' first inaugural address was two weeks prior to Abraham Lincoln's first inaugural address—which was the only time the United States of America had two Presidents sworn into office at the same time. Soon after this historical event, the Civil War began. This blood-soaked red book represents the pain and hardship America went through. The lighter red type for Davis' address shows his speech faintly remains seeped into America, while Lincoln's darker red type shows the permanence of the stamp he made as America's 16th leader.
