Most of Noguchi’s works are stone or light sculptures, but how can they be combined together? The Akari light’s outside is made of paper with looping lines, and it glows from the inside. But stones cannot give out light; they need the outside light to illuminate the surface. Simply and clearly, combining Japanese and American cultures, I was inspired to add thin lines outside the stones and inside the Akari lights to create their shapes. Light travels from the inside to the outside while we can only see the stone sculptures from the outside. Is there any way to see the sculptures’ insides through the light? That’s the main aim of the 40th anniversary of the Noguchi Museum, thus the name: Inside & Out.
