Akashic Books is a small, independent publishing press based in Brooklyn. Their mission is to elevate authors who are ignored by major corporate publishers and to highlight literature that explores social issues, politics, and cultural identity. My rebrand needed to be bold to match the edgy style of a Brooklyn brand. It also needed to be inclusive and diverse, symbolizing the breadth of cultural voices represented by Akashic Books. I took an opportunity to transform this brand because its mission aligns with my design objective to help amplify artists’ work and aid in exposing social concerns. The final branding system uses an icon that expresses amplification. I use oval icons because a closed circle represents inclusivity. The information sits within a dynamic grid that can be changed based on the composition, which mirrors the cultural shift the brand is trying to make.
