The Perils of Indifference by the famous Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel was delivered at the White House in 1999. In his speech, Elie recalls his suffrage in the concentration camps to warn his listeners of the dangers of being indifferent. He explains that anger and hate are (re)actions driven by powerful human emotion, but indifference is simply the lack of emotion, and for that reason it can only benefit the enemy, never the victim.
This installation presents Elie Wiesel's words on a bed sheet because when we are asleep, we are inactive, therefore we are indifferent. This sheet is a reminder to us all to wake up.
