A design for a friend’s novel trilogy, including complete first novel, and back covers for the other two.
The concept is a mirror tunnel: how curiosity leads to uncovering more than you could have imagined, and represents the characters’ parallel stories.
The Infinitum Trilogy is a young adult fantasy/supernatural novel series. It revolves around four characters from different worlds, each seeking answers to their own mysteries. They find their paths converging in a strange and magical new world, which serves as the hub for countless others. With the numerous worlds converging into one place, the book has a sense of clutter, portraying images of rooms piled with an array of magical items and artifacts. This is represented with the pattern of mirrors, which serve as the portals to different worlds, each hand-drawn to unify the variety of different types of mirrors. The cover illustration is stylized to convey the vividly imaginative and otherworldly tone of the novel. The expressions and poses also portray some of the traits of the protagonists. For example, the second character from the left, Jeffrey, is running away from the horrors of his own world. To his right, Salymond is searching with unhindered determination for his missing parents.
The cover is die cut and layered so each character is on a different plane. It enhances the feeling of depth, and creates a tactile sensation of being pulled into the book.
The color red implies the impending danger faced by the characters on their journey. The red chapter openers create a pattern of red lines on the book’s edge, symbolic of the reader travelling into a number of new worlds throughout the story, and the trials faced with each new discovery.
Chapter openers, drop caps, page breaks, and other hand-drawn elements carry the sense of otherworldiness throughout the interior of the book. Each element introduces a new visual aesthetic, sourced from a variety of unusual typography books and other sources for decorative elements.
The second book focuses on the winged character, Salymond, and the tragedy he faces when his questions are finally answered. The character endures a physical and emotional fall when he is left with his wings mangled, so the cover is dominated by a red background. The second book focuses on the winged character, Salymond, and the tragedy he faces when his questions are finally answered. The conclusion of the series surrounds the struggle for power, both outside of the characters and within them, as the magic user, Adrian, struggles to gain control over the magical being that shares his mind.
