On the Pulse of Morning On the Pulse of Morning On the Pulse of Morning
Client: Richard Poulin SVA Advanced Typography Maya Angelou’s poem, “On the Pulse of Morning,” for Bill Clinton’s Inauguration of 1993 expressed the notion of worldwide equality. This book was designed as two separate pieces joined together to make one singular book. The top is a compilation of photographs by renowned American photographers of the famous, the poor, the workers, the politicians, simply, people from all walks of life. The bottom half expresses the meaning and movement of the poem through the way it is typeset. These two elements support one another and each image can be viewed with any part of the poem as they are bound together, but can be flipped separately. It was hand bound and so good that the original was stolen. Typeset in Bellevue, Futura, and Caslon 540.
