Concept: Knot
I wanted to portray the feeling of solidity that I felt from reading this excerpt from “A Natural History of the Senses,” which was a reaction to the content but also Diane Ackerman’s unique writing style. I thought about the strength of connection that senses bring, and chose the imagery of knots to express this. The senses come together to give us a strong connection between the world and ourselves, as well as the senses themselves having a strong connection with each other for this phenomenon to happen. For creating organic knots, I used celtic knots, various rope knots, and Mira Schendel’s sculptural work as inspirations.
