Although this issue hadn’t been in the public spotlight, it should have been because it was a serious problem. Large
multinational companies around the world have used children as de facto slave laborers to make their products, including clothing, shoes, and candy. These children
were forced to work ten to twelve hour days in the fields or in sweatshops to make the products we love for little pay.
Rather than show children working to their last ounce of
energy, whether in fields or factories, it seemed appropriate
to make business cards to stress how these practices create
permanent and binding identities for these children. Every
‘company executive’ carried a business card, so these cards
underscored the reality of child labor. People should be aware
of the issue so they could partner with others to help it come to an end. No one should sacrifice his or her childhood for corporate profits.
