PERRY BRASS is an LGBTQ-oriented independent publisher based in NYC.
Perry Brass was intimately involved with the fabric of major gay rights activity in New York City during the 1970s-90s. Unlike the gay culture of today, in the culture of yesteryear people were very discreet about being openly gay due to social implications. They had a number of clandestine codes to express themselves that were known only amongst the gay community at the time.
I was inspired by the gay cultural touchstones of the era of the 70’s through 90’s; especially the usage of colored bandanas popular with the “Tom of Finland” type of gay man that indicated one’s sexual preference and/or position.
I created a typographical and visual system that indicates gay relationships and to illustrate the gestalt of 70’s through 90’s gay culture.
Perry Brass in its position as publisher focuses on gay adult fiction, written by Perry Brass himself. I created as yet nonexistent elements such as photo essays and fiction titles for books to further empower the brand.
