Located in Central Park, the Balto Monument is dedicated to Balto and his sled dogs who traveled over 600 miles to deliver medicine to Nome, Alaska during arctic blizzards. I was tasked with analyzing the monument’s physical features in person (notably the typography), and conducting additional research in order to create a book of my findings. This project was a deep dive into the subtle nuances of type design, as well as an opportunity to learn more about Balto’s story. The book features a brief history of Balto and his journey and also dives into the monument’s typography, which resembles that of the Art Nouveau period.
